This male Red-winged Blackbird (top image) was doing everything he could to attract a mate from constant conk-la-ree song to fluffed-up, puffed-out bright shoulder patches. And, the beautiful Red-winged Blackbird female seemed to be making him work really hard to get her attention. Watched them well over 30 minutes and the courting continued. They seemed to take turns flying back and forth to the same area. Although, they were never at the same spot at the same time. Photographed at Green Cay Wetlands. Honored to be asked to write a guest blog for the Friends of the Smokies. This organization is the primary sponsor for the Artist-In-Residence program at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Writing this article was a wonderful way to relive so many special adventures to capture the beauty and wonder of this land, its nature, its spirit and the essence of the pioneers who settled here and gave up their homesteads so we could enjoy this park today.
